Shots in detail

Unit 4, 5 & 62

Shots for the promotional film:

The shots for the film went into a lot of detail. Considering all the lighting and angles was something we prepared for first hand so each shot has been prepared and chosen because it shows the college in the best way possible
This is a shot of the college on the field from the side. The shot was chosen because it captures everything in one single frame; the college, car park, trees and bright sky. All of these elements make the college look bold. The lighting was in fact very gloomy that day and it look as though it was going to rain, but we managed the get the sun in the top left hand corner. The focus as well turns to the college which is central, with the background looking particularly brighter. The colour balance and exposure too really highlight the college and make it look much brighter too. Now the angle was a long shot but also medium because I had to centre the college as I have said.
One of the shots was like this of a friend who volunteered to become interviewed to talk about the college. The lighting was poor as the room’s lights were very dark, so we decided that we would edit that in the computer when it came to editing. The angle was a medium shot, only showing the top half of him to concentrate on him talking. But also in the background, I wanted the audience to look at his work which he was working on. I chose this work because it looked creative and a brilliant design. It shows off just some of the work which is done at the college. The colour balance was very much focusing on the white on the TV and the skin colour of Chris. In this frame it’s still very gloomy but I will touch up on that when it’s time to edit.

Script for the presentation

Script

Ben: As part of our creative media course we have been asked to create a Digital promotional film that could be used to help endorse and advertise the college, and particularly the creative media side of the college, on a variety of different delivery platforms.
Khalid: The content in the film will be showing actual teachers presenting the course to students so the audience has an understanding of what happens in the course. Along with this, the film will show off parts of the college from the library to the ICT centre. The film will be narrated over too to explain everything as it goes along.
In our promotional film, we will be showing parts of the college off in a film. This will be in a positive light to try and promote the BTEC creative media course. The content in the film will be showing actual teachers presenting the course to students so the audience has an understanding of what happens in the course. Along with this, the film will show off parts of the college from the library to the ICT centre.
Kallum:  We will also be showing students giving their opinion on the course. This obviously means that we will be interviewing students that are on the course and teachers that teach the course. The film will be narrated over too to explain everything as it goes along.
The target audience for the advertisement would be the people looking to study the subject or are interested in the college as a choice too. The advertisement would benefit the target audience as it will help them to decide whether this is the college for them and weather they feel that this is the course for them.
This advertisement will be age appropriate and will feature all the things that are expected by student looking for the college with what they need.
Ben: The resources we will be using to make our film will be very basic. Of course, we will be using a video camera to film the whole thing. We will also be using a microphone to record the narration that is going over the video.  The final thing we will be using will be obviously a computer to put the film together.
The budget for our creative media promotional film will be £1,000. We decided to go with £1,000 because it is an adequate amount for a small scale promotional film promoting the college course.
Khalid: We begin planning the promotional film. This involves creating the Backup plans, Brainstorms, Storyboards, and Scripts. We will then have a client meeting, and based on the choices we have in that meeting, we will make the appropriate changes to the script, storyboards, etc.  We will then start filming process.    This involves: finding locations for filming. Then starting and finishing the filming process.
Kallum: We will then have another client meeting, and again based on the choices/ changes made in that meeting will make the appropriate changes to the film. This includes editing and reshoots for some scenes if necessary. We will then have the final client meeting and then burn the film onto DVD’s, and upload the promotional film to college home page.
Any questions?

Researching the target audience

Research for my target audience

In order to have an understanding of my target audience, I need to research to all of the areas which will identify which audience I am aiming for. I am also looking at various things that attract my target audience to the certain subject that I am promoting. This includes what age group, gender, lifestyle and also location.

Research an idea

The target audience I am aiming for is students that are looking to apply for college in the area of Manchester. I am trying to attract an audience of people that are interested in the creative side of media. Of course, all of media is creative, but the course takes you through the creative process using computers and creating animations, along with so much more.
The age group I am trying to get across to be newly finished school pupils who are interested in the media. The thing about the extended side of the creative media course is that it involves a lot of gaming usually. What I mean by this is the course takes you through video games, which isn’t for a lot of people. The course is two years which means its split into two different types of work.
The first year, the course focuses on things like video gaming and how they are put together. The second focuses on a various amounts of things from TV idents to animations. The reason why this course would do so well is because of the recent rise of video game purchases over the last few years.
Video games are improving every day and the popularity grows and grows. This means the course would be a rising success today. Gender wise is put into consideration too. It isn’t a sexist view, but it’s actually a fact that more men play video games than women do. It isn’t saying that women don’t play video games, they do, and it’s just saying that men are a wider audience to get onto the course.
The lifestyle of someone who would like to join this course is for people that play video games quite often or watch TV quite frequently. The lifestyle isn’t for everyone though, it’s a specific lifestyle which means you have to be used to certain things, like playing video games, watching television and mostly just having a keen interest in the media as a whole.
The location for somewhere to film this would bright and indoors. I want the viewers to see the course while it’s being done, rather than being outside in the middle of nowhere. The location would be indoors all the time. The only time the filming will happen is indoors when we are filming people actually getting on with the course but some filming which will possibly be outside, will only be of the college being presented.

Feedback from the pitch

Feedback from the pitch

Me and my team have finished the pitch and have received a merit overall. The pitch went very successful and we overall added all of the information that the client needed. The main areas we hit at were outlining the making of the film and the production going into making the film altogether. Another was planning everything as whole. We have planned everything quite well with each date being as accurate to date, but we did have some criticism, which we always expect and try and improve for the future.
One of the criticisms was describing the film itself. We spent so much time describing the films making aspects that we didn’t include information about what will be in the film, from what we will be showing to what the tone of the film will be. In the presentation, we thought that wouldn’t be as important to add in as the rest of the content, but we really should of added it anyway, it is obviously very important to.
Another thing which we didn’t add which we knew we had was the schedule. This was a clear mistake which we had done because we did have the schedule ready to hand, but for some reason it wasn’t added to the pitch. This wasn’t a problem though because we added enough information into the pitch to achieve a merit still but these sorts of mistakes will not happen again. My main concern overall though was not adding any information about what the video will be about. We all sat together and discussed the content of the video and it was my job to make the content, but it just didn’t add to the presentation.
All of the mistakes which we had in the presentation, we gathered that we did miss out a lot of information. Information that was really needed in the presentation as the client asked us a lot of questions which we didn’t answer for.
Overall we think that we could have done much better on the pitch. We believe that if we tried to promote the pitch again that we would be able to get a distinction and add all of the information we missed out into the presentation. We haven’t decided yet whether we are going to try and do the pitch again, but we are thinking about it. If we do, we will add all of the information we missed out into the presentation.

Proposal

Promotional material comes from things like videos. I researched previous college videos to see how they promoted the courses and the college itself. Virally the college sent out many videos to try and promote the college in a positive way for others to consider joining. Viral marketing actually works very well these days too because the internet is everywhere and on everything. Computers are now a part of everyday life and it’s on the go too. Mobile phones and handheld devices, 3G etc. etc., everyone has heard of things like these, so it’s not hard to hear about something being promoted over the internet. The videos the college promoted all contained interviews too with teachers and students of the college so this adds to the promoting of the college. The advantage of this is it doesn’t cost much to make unlike advertising.

The disadvantage.
Advertising is everywhere too. For advertising you need to follow a specific set of rules to make it work. First, you need to advertise where an audience will see the advertisement most like on billboards or on signs. Everyone is out and about at some point during a day so it’s noticeable to get advertising there. Another is through television and on the internet which is where I did most of my research. An advertisement can go one of two ways as I’ve seen in my research. One; the advertisement can do really well and get the attention of many people and sell. Or two; the advertisement can completely flop and fail. Several reasons are behind this though. Sometimes when someone promotes an advertisement it can be seen as spam. This means the advertisement is trying too hard to be noticed, rather than giving it time to be noticed by people. For things like promoting a college or a course, you would promote the course in that chosen subject area. For example, with creative media you would promote the course around things media, like video, TV, internet and magazines. For a college, you would choose something like a school to advertise it to, because high school children would be leaving that year.
Viral marketing is when you virally advertise or market something to an audience of people. Viral means when something is spread like a virus over the World Wide Web. For example if someone sends you an email to share the latest new clothing line, that is viral marketing. The problem with viral marketing is it could be seen as spam because it is usually seen as spam. The reason for this is because the internet is full of unnecessary things that aren’t really important.
Platforms are things which the promotional material will be on, like DVD’s, the WWW, and in a presentation.
A DVD for example is something which everyone knows about, if not, it would seem technology has not hit them properly. With a DVD, it’s a small tiny disc which fits into a DVD player (which only specifically plays DVD’s and CD’s). The advantage of DVD’s is it’s a compact device and just about everyone has a DVD player. It’s something which most people have in their homes so it wouldn’t be hard to sell it through this method. The disadvantage is if people don’t have it in their home. Some people of course do that not have a DVD player in their home and that makes it less of a chance to sell it to this market.
Another format is putting the video onto the World Wide Web. The internet is something which is everywhere these days; you can’t really escape it anywhere. So putting the promotional material on the internet would be a good idea right? Well yes, sort of. The internet is full of ways to upload and share things with anybody of your choice. For example, websites like YouTube are ways to upload the video so people can watch what you have made. It’s simple enough because people can see what you have made and comment on it too. The problem with putting it on the internet is the same with people with DVD’s; some people don’t have the internet. Not everyone has the internet. Also, not many people use the internet just to watch videos; the internet is for a knowledge purposes and most use it for this method.
When doing something like a Presentation it’s quite a good choice because a presentation gets straight to the point. When pitching the idea of promotional material its good because the people you are pitching it to can ask you any questions they have straight away instead of waiting like through DVD’s and the internet. The presentation means you can pitch the idea and everyone has more trust because you are pitching it right in front of them. The down side to doing a presentation is the fact it’s not something which is using much multimedia. It’s all done with you presenting the idea, not the DVD or internet, so it’s all in control by you.

Technology

With technology, it’s quite easy to promote digital promotional material because it’s a simple and easy concept because of how far technology has gone over the last 100 years.
Digital file formats are the things that we save our things on, like videos and computer files. This means things like MP3 and MP4 for music formats. These sorts of formats can be compressed onto things like CD’s and DVD’s so that you can play them on devices. These formats can also be used for streaming through the internet. They can become available these days with things like iTunes and other stores like this because things like this are everywhere. Digital formats are everywhere these days because of how far technology has come.

Streaming methods and media players

Streaming methods are everywhere like I’ve said. The internet has taken over just about everything and it’s really quite amazing. Websites like YouTube are the kind of sites that stream things like videos and music all day long. This is the sort of thing which is perfect to upload our college videos. Well, we did our research and we know there are already college videos. It’s a very simple way of creating and showing the information that we want to show to a wider audience. The video needs to be compressed though because otherwise it wouldn’t buffer and play through a website like YouTube.

Compression

If a file is too big to do anything with it, it needs to be compressed. Compressing the file is basically reducing the size of a file to save space and time. This can be described with things like lossy and lossless compression. When a lossy image is compressed and it’s reduced so it can be a webpage, the image can’t be restored to its natural state. It says like that permanently. Whereas a lossless image, can be compressed and restored back to its normal state. That’s the difference.

Data transfer rate

The data transfer rate is the rate that data transfers from one place to another. The greater bandwidth of a given path, the higher the data transfer rate. The higher the rate, the less time it takes for a larger file to be transferred to another place. Say someone sends you a digital video file and the client has a small bandwidth, the file with take some time to download and the file will buffer. This means the file will take time to download. So to stop this, the file will need to be compressed so it’s not that big to download.

Digital right management systems

The digital file will either be on a DVD or MOV. Platform and will be copyrighted by the owners, which will be Cheadle and Marple Sixth form college. This will contain all college copyright including the watermark. It will not slander the college or contain any inappropriate material.

Client brief

Unit 4, 5, 62 Assignment 1 - Task 3A
(Client Brief)

Introduction
this is the Client Brief for the Advertisement. The advertisement that is to be created is to promote a subject of our choosing at Cheadle&Marple Sixth Form College. The subject that the advert is going to be promoting is Creative Media. The advert will feature the course and the college in a positive way as to promote the course/college the students.

Target>audience
the target audience for the advertisement would be students who are looking at ides for what courses to study at college. The advertisement is there to both advertise the course and the college to the students and persuade them that this is the college and course for them. The subject that I have chosen to promote is the Creative Media extended Diploma at Level 3 simply for the reason that I feel that students that have just come out of high school may enjoy a change from the normal subjects that are usually taught in school. Creative media is not a subject that is usually taught in schools so for 16 year olds it will be a nice change and a great opportunity. The advertisements purpose is to advertise the course and the college to the students that wish to go onto higher education.

About>Cheadle&Marple
Cheadle&Marple is a sixth form College that has been split into two campuses (Cheadle) & (Marple). The College is among the largest and most successful colleges in the country. The college focuses on students aged 16 – 18 and offers a variety of courses such as A-Level courses which help to move on to higher forms of education e.g. University Degrees. The courses offered are not just A – Level based there are courses offered to build up to higher levels e.g. if you arrive at the college with less than adequate qualifications you can take a foundation year of sorts such as level 1 business or level 2 ICT to get you to A –Levels. The college also offers a number of work placements in the form of an apprenticeship which is a learning and working placement which students can do in place of A – Levels if they which to finish off their education at Level 1 or 2.

The college is a fun learning environment with the witty students and encouraging teaching staff. There are a number of create resources for the students  such as the library open to all , the college VLE which stands for Virtual Learning Environment were you can get all kinds of information about each course you are doing. The college is also part of the ProPortal system were students can check there grades as the year progress not to mention the attendance reports for the parents.

About>the>Course
The media industry is in an age of rapid growth with global communication networks bringing the digital age to every home. This is a broad-based two year course equivalent to three A Levels. It offers an integrated creative and technical study of media production, which looks at core aspects of the media industry. Although the course is practical, developing skills such as team-building, communication and presentation, there are substantial written elements that have to be covered in each unit. Multi-skilling is encouraged as it plays such an important role in the new media industry. The course is both rewarding and challenging and is designed to assist students in coping with the ever changing world of media and communication.

Course outline - year one: You will be introduced into the creative world of the media industries. In this year you will research, plan, design, storyboard, create and evaluate products using similar techniques to those used by the professionals. You will manipulate digital graphics, produce a stop-motion animation, design a website, create a Multimedia product, work on a print-based publication, create a 2D animation and look at computer games design. Theoretical areas covered during the first year include research techniques used in the new Media industries and career pathways and communication skills.

Course outline - year two: Building on what you have learned in Year 1 you will produce a video advertisement, design web animations, create a variety of vector-based documents, design TV Idents, create a Flash website, produce a promotional CD/ DVD show reel and even look at digital graphics for computer games. You will develop the skills required to manage a project in the New Media industries by working with a client to a specified brief.

…..
My>company

in the past, we worked on previous videos including animations such as stop motion animation. We also created digital graphics including logos, navigation bars for websites, and ideas for rollover buttons. We are familiar and experienced with computer programs used to edit videos and we are used to creating professional standard digital videos.

Budget
the budget is set at £4000 which is the max amount.

Time>scales
before the advertisement is created there is a period were the plans for the advertisement are drawn up which contains every aspect and what is expected of the product such as backup plans, Brainstorms, Storyboards, Scripts, sketches and mode boards. When all of this is being done it has to be done in detail as to match the advertisement and then we actually created and edit the advertisement. The advertisement has to be completed by November 2012

Format
the format of the advertisement has been discussed and the best option is a DVD. These DVD’s would be cheap with a small disc space but enough for the advertisement. The college logo would be on the disc and would be handed out at parent’s evenings open days to give idea of course and why they should choose it. When the discs are loaded into the computers the advert would be on auto play so that it would automatically run and play the advert. The reason that a disc has been chosen is that they are cheap and effective and everyone has a DVD player and when the disc is in the advert plays automatically and this is what we want for people to see the advert at will.
