Unit 65 Assignment 2

Website 1: YHA Australia

Visual Style: the style of the website is bright and vibrant. It’s clear what kind of market its trying to attract when you view it straight away. The colours are all bold and beaming with looks it’s easy enough to tell it’s meant for a young audience, somewhere around 18 to 25 I would guess. The colours all contrast each other too. What I mean by this is the colours all make the text stand out which means it’s easily visible to someone. They don’t make it look like they are mixing together and it’s not very visible. It’s bold. What I like most though is the layout of the website. Everything has its space and fits perfectly on the page. It’s not cramped or squashed together, it looks clean and edgy.

Colour Palettes: the colour on the website all look great as I’ve said. The image to the left shows what I’m trying to explain. The colour on the website has a theme of blue and white/grey, which also mixes in a whole various amount of colours.

Typography: the text has different elements of being quite bold but also normal. It uses a sans serif font on the pages and this really highlights what target audience it’s attracting. The boldness shows that it’s big and shouting out at you, and the fact it’s all in capitals highlights this too. The page is for youths all over, not just showing that because the page is called ‘YHA’, but the page is definitely showing that.

Sounds: the page doesn’t have any sounds.

Interactivity: the interactivity with the page is rather basic. Nothing really that special, you have to click specific buttons to get directed to the link. The thing that did make me surprised was the image of the Australian map in the centre of the page. It’s completely interactive even when you scroll the mouse over the image. Not only that, it even changes when you scroll onto the text which makes the whole image completely interactive.

Website 2: Oz Intro

Visual Style: the overall style of the website can only be described by me as very blue. The whole layout has this bright and blue background that I think is supposed to represent the sea in Australia as being something quite bright, blue and clean. The website is made to look like an adventure or a holiday that’s showing images of what happened. The images look like Polaroid’s for an old camera. In all of the images, the people are all smiling and happy about where they are. This is something that attracts the audience to going. As you can see in most of the images too, all of the people are young. They all look around 18-25 so you know this is something for a younger audience.

Colour Palette: the colour is very bright. From the looks of the background it looks like a real image of the sea with a boat riding through the waves, but it’s more than likely Photoshopped. The colour of the text too is a bright yellow to represent the sun which is always gleaming in Australia.

Typography: the text is very bold and easy to read. The text is in a big font and in white so it’s easily visible with the blue background. The font is normal Calibri Body which is very plain to put on a website that is so bright. All of the big titles are all Photoshopped first before they were put on the site. They are not a normal text, somebody has edited it themselves.

Sounds: there are no sounds on the website.

Animation: the website has no animations either. The website looks very advanced, but it is quite basic.

Storyboards

Home Page:

This is the home page to the design of the website I am looking at. The space at the bottom is for more writing, this is just an outline to what it will just look like at the moment. The home page will include much more multimedia such as images and pop ups which lead to other pages and websites.

Information Page:

The information page is meant for people with any questions towards anything that has to do with Oz Backpackers. The information will be held in the box to the right which will briefly explain everything that Oz Backpackers is, what they do and how the experience of going backpacking across Australia will change your life. There is also a question box which is for anyone that has any questions that haven’t been answered by the information box. The person sends the questions and leaves there email address as well in the box, so we can get back to them about the question they want answering.
Contacts:

In my opinion, the contacts page on any website should be short and simple. There should be one email address and a phone number, and that’s all that needs to be there. If not, I think it looks a little suspicious. On my contacts page, there is 2 telephone numbers and an email address followed by an address where you can send letters.

Places:

The places page is dedicated to the places where Oz Backpackers provides hostels for anyone travelling with the company. There is a map on the page which pin points all of the locations where you can stay while travelling along with Oz Backpackers.

Pictures:

I thought the pictures page was a good idea because it shows various pictures of people enjoying themselves while on holiday in Australia. What I thought was a good idea, was adding information at the bottom of each picture explaining the person’s name, why they began travelling with Oz Backpackers and how they have found the experience, perhaps with a quote. It just adds another edge of realism to the site.

Booking:

The booking page is the page where the user can pay and book the trip to go to Australia with Oz Backpackers. The user can add all of their details and decide when they want to go, how they want to travel, how long they want to go for, and what they would like to do when they get there. The obvious question added is where they want to stay too. This includes an image which highlights the page.
Diary for Unit 65 Assignment 2

23/10/12: Today’s lesson, we started to create our websites on Adobe Flash. We had to follow our ideas that we made for Assignment 1 and create them on flash.
By the end of the lesson, I will have created the outlining of my home page on Adobe Flash.
The image to the right is the starting ground of my first page. I managed to create the background, buttons and the title. I converted them all to their appropriate platforms too so they work on a website. By the end of this lesson, I managed to achieve quite a bit more than I expected. I expected to create the background and the title and that was it. But what I managed to create was the background, the title and several buttons which work already. The home button, which you can see to the left, I made so that when the mouse runs over it, it goes blurry. I did this with all of my buttons so it makes it look interactive. So basically I achieved more than I set out to do. To change my buttons to a button, it was something I never really got used to but I managed it. What I had to do was go to ‘modify’ then ‘convert to symbol’ in flash. Once I did that a menu appears. The menu is the one to the left. Basically for a button, you have to change the type to button, and name it something like ‘btn_ozbackpackers’ so you remember what it called for future uses.

25/10/12: Today’s lesson, we carried on with the same task of creating our websites in Adobe Flash. Today I will try and make my buttons click to make them go to another page and edit the title and buttons.

By the end of the lesson, I will have done all of my graphics. What I mean by this is creating the rollover button, filters and buttons when they button is pressed.

I have created two other pages including the ‘pics’ page and the ‘places’ page. I made the buttons click so they navigate to the next page.

06/11/12: Today’s lesson, I am going to make all of my pages navigate properly to the right page. All of my pages are navigating properly at the moment, but they aren’t navigating to the next page when I click onto another button. This is what I am going to fix and make work properly today.

By the end of the lesson, I have managed to make the buttons navigate to the correct page by using this method.

Firstly I changed the individual icons to a button. To do this I clicked the image and went to ‘modify’ then ‘convert to symbol’. Then a new pop up appears and makes you choice what you want to make your icon to. I chose to make my icon a ‘button’ so that I could

13/11/12: Today’s lesson, I started by linking all the pages together so the buttons work for each pages. The way I did this was different from everyone in the class because I have missed a few lessons, so I decided to do it the way I remembered in the first time we started to make websites.

To start, I clicked the button ‘home’ and made the actions for the button. To start, I right clicked the icon and clicked actions. The box appears which gives you the choice of what you want to do with the buttons. I started by clicking , ‘global functions; timeline control; go to’. What this does is when the button is clicked it does this function, which is when the button is pressed it does what I’ve told it to do. I then copied this function on each of the buttons to make sure this works on each of the scenes.

I then made different scenes for each of the buttons so they have their separate pages. To do this, I just copied the ‘pics’ scene and duplicated it. This is an easier process than doing the same thing over and over again, which takes up too much time. Once this is done, the buttons work properly.

I then had to make the buttons stop at the end of their scenes. To do this is I made a new layer on the timeline by clicking this button.

This adds a new layer to the scene (doesn’t matter which scene) and I named it ‘actions’. I right clicked on the layer and clicked ‘actions’. This time I only clicked ‘stop’. This stops the layer meaning it wont move to another layer without you clicking another button.

I then copied this layer onto each of the scenes so the scene does exactly the same thing on each page without moving to another.

15/11/2012: Today’s lesson, I will be concentrating on putting all of the content on each of the pages, like images and pieces of work which are relevent to each piece of content.

To being with, I started by importing images onto the stage and library of the website. To do this I went to ‘file; import; import to library’. Once I did this, I just imported all of my images that I wanted to use into the library. The images are kept inside the library section which is here.

All of the images can just be dragged over and placed onto the stage.

But I wanted to change the images to movie clips so I could make an animation out of the images. To do this was just the same method that I used to convert the icons for my pages into buttons. I went to ‘modify; convert to symbol’.

Then the box to the left appears and gives you the option to change the thing to a graphic, a movie clip or a button. I chose movie clip because I want my pictures to have an animation. I did this to all my images so that they appear on the page at the same time.

20/11/12: Today’s lesson, I will add all of the contents onto all of the pages so that the webpage will work properly. I have been experiencing problems with connecting all of the pages over the last few lessons but I have fixed this problem now.

22/11/12: Today’s lesson, I am adding all the finishing touches to my website as its nearly finished. I spent quite a bit of the lesson trying to get scroll boxes on all of the text I am adding to each of the pages.

This was something which took me a while because it just didn’t want to work. First of all, I drew a text box which the text icon in the options to the right. Then, I drew the text box to however big I wanted it. I copied the text and pasted it into the box that I created. This is where the text went wrong. The next thing to do is change the text to a movie clip. This is something ive repeated several times before; its just ‘Modify; Convert to symbol; Movie Clip’.

The next thing I had to do was change the text from ‘Static text’ to ‘Dynamic text’. This meant that the text can be scrollable .

The next thing which I forgot to do was right click on the text and make the text ‘scrollable’.

This made the text scrollable now, but I still needed to add a scroll bar to make the text scroll. To do this I went to ‘Window’ at the top, and chose ‘Componants’, or you can just press ‘control’ and ‘F7’.

This box appears. Once it does, you double click the text box. This goes into the options for the movie clip of the text. You then choose ‘UIScrollBar’ and drag it onto the stage. This is where it wasn’t working.

I kept taking the scroll bar and putting it onto the place where I wanted it to work, but it wasn’t working whatsoever. I kept repeating this action but it still wasn’t working.

23/11/12: today’s lesson, I made the text on my ‘info’ page and put the texts onto all of the sections of the map on my ‘places’ page. I am almost finished with the entire website its just adding all of the finishing touches to all of the pages so it looks professional.

The main thing I had to do was adding all of the text from a document that was prepared before and add them to each of to the places on the map. Each one of the places in this Australian map has its own button and places added into it. This is so users can choose their own way around the website but also so they can choose their own place to go.

Once I did this the website was just about complete. I just needed to add all of the finishing touches like checking everything worked and making sure it was all ready to be set up. Next lesson I will finish off the assignment by completing the evaluation.

29/11/12: I have set up my website and it is all finished now. Its not perfect but its successful and its completed in the set amount of time that I had. I am happy with the result that I have when I finshed the website looks proffessional and well made.

To finish I have three lessons left to finish up everything on the assignment. This includes this diary which must be up to date from the first date to the final date. Without the diary the website is completely useless because it doesn’t show any evidence without it. Another is the website obviously. And the final thing is the evalution which must be completed by the last lesson on the Friday. But hopefully I will get the evaluation done by today.

Evaluation

Evaluation

This is an evaluation to confirm that I have completed my website and everything works. I have managed my time properly and managed to get my website completed on the set amount of time. This is an in depth evaluation on how I wanted my website to look first, my planning and if it met the success that I planned it out to have. Original Intentions My original intentions for my website were very clear. I started by looking at holiday websites that advertise to the target audience like myself and older. What I found out was all of the websites I researched had a similar theme. The theme was all of the websites were all trying to attract the same target audience, which were young adults that are looking to get away on holiday maybe for a gap year away from studies. It was obvious by the bright colours and texts that they all had, the pictures which all were of young adults enjoying the time of their lives. So then I knew what I wanted my website to look like. With everything beginning I started my assignment diary which linked with this assignment to keep track of everything I did in each lesson.

My original idea was something like this:

The colours all represented something and the texts all connected with someone of my age group. The good thing about creating a website that’s meant at my target age range is that I’m in that age range. This made the entire project much easier to think about. The text was a smart but silly bubble text which highlights that the website is professional, but it doesn’t take itself seriously too much. The colours were all to do with the setting, which is Australia. The yellow because the Sun is always out (it’s a stereotype but the sun is out a lot of time). The colour yellow and blue are to do with the sand and sea, which links with something’s like surfing and swimming. All of these things make me think of Australia and going on holiday, having a good time. The image is of the draft sketch which I made on the computer. This was just the test of the website but I made each page look attractive and professional. Production Process I started making my website straight away from creating the drafts and storyboards. I knew that we were going to be using Adobe Flash to create the website, so we had help creating test runs with Flash. I practised many times by creating test websites and linking them to others. I did this a couple of times till I got the hang of what I was doing. When I started the website properly, I decided to use a different method to the rest of the class because I understood the method I used better. It didn’t affect anything to do with the website; it was just a different method. Once I created the website storyboards, I continued to log in what I was doing every lesson Time Management I managed my time properly by deciding what I would do each lesson by writing it in my diary and trying to make it happen by the end. This was an effective way of doing it and I did get the tasks done in the amount of time I set myself. I planned my time out more effectively by doing all of the difficult tasks first then doing the more simple tasks last. I started by making all of the pages then linking the websites together. This was something which confused me a little bit, but I got it done eventually. The deadline for the website is 30th November 2012, which means everything has to be complete by then; the website, diary, storyboards and evaluation.

I completed all of the written work quite early on the assignment and started the website quite early. I finished the website early too and started to start the evaluation quite early, so meeting the deadline was something I did.

The Finished Product On the left side is the finished website, and on the right is storyboarded draft that I made. Obviously I made some changes to the finished one because the first was just a storyboard and a draft. But everything I made to begin with was made successful and more. I didn’t think at the beginning the website would be successful and it wouldn’t work at all, but it was a complete success.

Proposal

Proposal

Oz Backpackers offers economical accommodation to backpackers throughout Australia. Oz Backpackers realise they need a fully interactive and animated web site and have approached your design company to create an web site that provides backpackers with key information about hostels, tips on travelling in Australia, information on popular tourist sites and a booking form for travellers to be able to book accommodation.

I am going to create a fully interactive website which advertises Oz Backpacking. The website will have many pages dedicated to being a site that advertises backpacking in Australia. I will consider all copyright, legal and ethical considerations throughout my proposal.

Target audience

The target audience for my website is people who are travellers in the ages of 18 to 30. It’s more specific than that obviously. What the website is holding is for people that are around the age of 18 to 30 because this is an age group which want to explore the world. This is the age of students that go to college and university that want to travel the world and explore what’s out there. This is usually for people that want to take something called a ‘gap year’.

Visual style

The visual style of the website is bright and bold because it’s trying to attract my target audience. My target audience is an age group around 18 to 30 because it’s backpacking in Australia, it’s meant for a younger generation of people. This means that it has to be a site that stands out from any other adventure/hostel/holiday website because there is quite a few. The titles and writing has to be bold and bright and a colourful gold/yellow colour. The reason I have chosen a yellowy gold colour is because Australia is known for having sun shine nearly throughout the year. The theme for the website is a yellowy gold colour and a sea blue. It sounds very stereotypical but Australia is known for having sea, sun and surfing. It’s something that’s always been known of the country. The overall style of the website will be brass and ‘wow’.

Layout

The layout of the website is unusual in my opinion. Instead of having a clean cut straight websites with everything having its place and everything fits, I wanted to mix things up. I want the images on the page to be all over the page overlapping each other. All of the images must have people that have gone on holiday to Australia with smiling faces, enjoying themselves. The text boxes must be anywhere on the page, it doesn’t matter whether they are straight, they can be on any angle and any shape, I want it to be wacky and original. This is something you don’t see on many websites at all because they are trying to look as professional as possible. But what they are forgetting is to look fun and uplifting, which is something not many websites usually have either.

The types of images

Like I have said, the types of images I want on my website must be of travellers on their holiday to Australia, enjoying the holiday with smiles on their faces. This must be from both genders because I don’t want the website to be sexist towards either gender. The images must be of people in the age group too, nobody older or younger than the specific age group. All of the images we will use will all be copyrighted to the website and company which is Oz Backpackers. All of the images will not be in any way offensive to any religion or person. They will all be safe to anyone

Publishing format

The publishing format of the website will be done with flash. I chose this format because it is the one I feel I’m most comfortable with and I find it the easiest too. With flash, I can create animations to go with my website. I will also use various programs to publish the website like Dreamweaver as I have created a website with Dreamweaver before.

Legal and ethical considerations

I will and have already taken into consideration legal and ethical considerations. I have looked through all of the images, text and files, and nothing can be considered offensive towards anyone or any religion of any sort. The website will be safe towards anyone.

Websites for research

Website 1: YHA Australia

Visual Style: the style of the website is bright and vibrant. It’s clear what kind of market its trying to attract when you view it straight away.
